Technical Guru Gives Advice: 1080i on Coax

November Meeting - Wed., Nov.15

Randy Phillips, Program Chair
November 3, 2000

Dale Reed, of Trompeter Electronics, is the guest speaker at the next SBE meeting of Chapter 36, San Diego. His topic, "The science and technology of uncompressed 1080i HDTV video signal transmission in coax", will cover challenges & applications related to coaxial effects in a studio environment.

According to Dale, "This brief (half hour) presentation is designed to be useful to both technical and non-engineering personnel. The information is presented using everyday illustrations to teach the technology issues related to the use of low GigaHertz frequencies (similar to those used in high definition uncompressed video) in electrical signal transmission and management."

"The material contains examples of RF effects, why they matter, and what design solutions exist to solve the difficulties in working at higher frequency. Complex issues of wave length science including digital coding and sampling are demystified and presented in an understandable manner for a rich understanding, high recall, and solid retention. The 75 ohm BNC digital video connector plug is used to illustrate product elements."

In addition to publishing several technical articles, Mr. Reed has been involved in a rich variety of broadcast and communications-related businesses. He has a solid academic background and has made numerous presentations dealing with RF topics.

This month's meeting will be Wednesday, November 15, 2000 at 7pm. We've been invited to the El Cajon offices of Cox Communications to view their newly expanded technical facility. Items of interest at COX include their downlink, master control, & commercial insertion setup, as well as network servers for their digital, phone, and high speed data products.

Please join us for snacks & drinks provided graciously by Trompeter at 6pm followed by a short business meeting at 7 o'clock, a tour hosted by COX personnel, and then Dale's presentation. RSVP "graphil@home.com " or 619-266-5070
