January 1999 Meeting

Pacific Research & Engineering

by Gary Stigall, CSTE
Chairman

PR&E truly outdid itself in hosting the January meeting. It was a great date: good conversation with the twenty employees on-hand, a deli spread that left no excuse for not overeating, and some great lessons in how to build world-class product. The company celebrates thirty years of business this year, and many of the folks in attendance last night have been there for the greater part of that time.

Though founder Jack Williams was on the road, his wife and retired partner Ellyn was there to schmooze with old friends and clients. Attendees were introduced to Don Nabb, who recently took the helm as company president.

Product Manager Ted Staros showed us the Airwave Digital console with piggyback PC boards you swap to make a given input analog or digital. Another optional board allows for "B" input logic. Since control interfacing is built-in, gone are those ubiquitous interface boxes that used to drive external gear. Surface-mount technology put all the power their earlier consoles, and more, on small channel modules. Très élégant.

Little chapter business was discussed. I mentioned my intention to hold a Student Night in April, possibly at KFMB, due to the facility having both radio and television facilities. Kevin Douglass of Jacor Communications volunteered to host the FCC monitoring van for a March meeting. The February meeting will be held at Bext downtown.

Thanks for showing us a good time, PR&E!
